Whitstable engagement shoot – Jay & Chris (& Daisy the dog)
A few weeks ago, on a Sunday evening, I caught up with Jay & Chris for their Whitstable engagement shoot. The cooler evening was a welcome relief from the hot, hot days we’ve been enjoying this summer. They brought their little dog, Daisy, along with them for some photos too. She welcomed the opportunity to paddle in the puddles the departing tide left us with. Daisy is definitely one of the calmer pooches I’ve had in front of the camera – she was super chilled.
Jay and Chris are a couple with travel woven through their love story. They met in Cairns, got engaged in New York and are getting married at Boyne Hill House in Ireland next month. They live in the centre of Whitstable, not far from me, and chose to have a Whitstable engagement shoot. With all the wonderful locations that feature in the story of Jay & Chris, I love that the place they made their home, Whitstable, gets to play its part in their engagement shoot.
On warm summer days, people flock to this part of the Kent coast from all over. They come for the cooling relief of a sea breeze; the blue flag beach; the oysters and the working harbour. Not to mention the locally owned shops and cafes and delicious ice creams (check out Sundae Sundae – mine’s a scoop of rum & raisin and salted caramel in a honeycomb-dipped cone!). Evenings see the locals walking their dogs, families enjoying fish and chips on the slopes in Tankerton and couples sharing romantic strolls whilst the sun starts to set.
I walk along Whitstable beach at least once a week and I am eternally captivated by it. The views across the water from the slopes and a stunning stretch of shoreline would be a joy to find if you were holidaying overseas and it’s right here in Kent.
Jay, Chris & I started their Whitstable engagement shoot just before golden hour, that time before the sun sets where the light becomes just magical. We wandered down Tankerton slopes, chose our favourite beach huts, took Daisy out on to ‘the street’, a stretch of beach that appears at low tide and just as we were finishing up the sun blessed us by setting in to the sea with the most fantastic colours.
I can’t wait to photograph Jay & Chris’s wedding next month. It’s sure to be a perfect celebration of everything that makes these two so very special. For now, here are some highlights from their Whitstable engagement shoot.
